The Jefferson Council was formed to pursue the following goals:
- Promote a culture of civil dialogue, the free exchange of competing ideas and intellectual diversity throughout the University.
- Preserve the Jefferson Legacy.
- Preserve the appearance of the Lawn as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and
- Support and reinvigorate the Honor System.
The Jefferson Council is organized as a Virginia nonstock, nonprofit corporation, and it is governed by a board of directors.
