UVa’s YAF Chapter Recognized

The Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) has been honored by the Young America’s Foundation as the 2021-22 National YAF Chapter of the Year. Accepting the award is YAF President Nickolaus Cabrera, who also serves as a student representative of The Jefferson Council. Last year the UVa chapter organized hosted three events with conservative speakers, topped off by former Vice President Mike Pence. The Jefferson Council is delighted to have co-funded the speakers, and we extend our congratulations to Nick and his fellow Yaffers who made it all happen.

Well done, U.Va. YAF students and the Jefferson Initiative.
We can celebrate the return of conservative thought and leadership to the Grounds.

Glad to hear there are brave and thoughtful students still at UVA. I donate to YAF but can we donate specifically to the Wahoo chapter and if so, how?

Glad to learn we have such a group on the Grounds and to learn they are tolerated by the administration. Congratulations to them.

But it should be more than tolerated. The Federalist Society chapter at the Law School has also won national recognition, and UVA likes to use these examples to claim free speech exists. But these chapters do not receive UVA help. Where is the funding? Where is the cooperation? Where is the outreach to ask if UVA, with $14 billion in foundations, could recruit sympathetic speakers? UVA’s non-discrimination statement says it does not discriminate on the basis of political orientation. How does 95% of faculty contributions to federal campaigns going to Democrats square with that? The required DEI statements for faculty review?
UVA’s so-called unequivocal support for free speech is a fig leaf. Let’s see real action – like critical articles in UVA Today, instead of non-stop propaganda…

Great points, Walter. Rather hypocritical of President Ryan to cite former VP Mike Pence’s speech as “proof” of his commitment to intellectual diversity when YAF and The Jefferson Council recruited him and paid 100% of his speaker’s fee. The Jefferson Council even had to pay a rental fee so he could speak at Old Cabell Hall.

UVA and President Ryan literally did nothing.
