Here’s a schematic of the University of Virginia’s “Inclusive Competency Model” as found in an Office of Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights document on the University website.
That’s what you get when you turn over management of organizational culture to an army of bureaucrats.
Here’s The Jefferson Council alternative:
No bureaucrats needed. Just a clear message from the University president, provost, and deans.
Very Jeffersonian and as such a horror to the Ivy League invaders populating the administration and faculty.
The University can post Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s. famous words: “content of character, not color of skin,” around the University. Florida has fired all D.E.I. bureaucrats from all State supported colleges and universities. It can be done. $$$ savings can be used to increase “inclusivity” by lower tuition cost.
There is a problem with the JFC alternative, even though I appreciate the spirit. Many of our students are not brought up knowing how to do that, and many of our colleagues have no genuine interest (which you can even see in the contradictions in the above schematic: “leverage socio-cultural difference?!”).
So we would need something slightly more instructive.
“Treat everyone with courtesy and respect by: 1) demonstrating humility and curiosity in a genuine effort to get to know each individual student or colleague; and 2) approaching each interaction, even conflict, with a charitable spirit.” (and maybe a “3) not manipulating or otherwise using them as sub-human instruments.”)
I’ll go along with (1) and (2) above.
(3) seems redundant.
I agree RE (3)…but if you came to work here and dealt with people “leveraging” students all the time, you might change your mind.
Can you say a little more about them being used as sub-human instruments? By whom to what end? How are they being leveraged? Four years of undergraduate life should put the final touches on a well-rounded young person prepared to make a meaningful contribution to society no matter what their avocation turns out to be. Or did I miss something……..
Respect and good manners go a long way! Thank you for sharing Jim.
This is great!
PLEASE – click on the link and read all the gobbledyggok definitions of the attributes of “Inclusive Competency.”
Now I ask, did the BOV model “inclusive competency” on Friday afternoon, March 1, 2024?
I think not.
Since this example of brilliance came from OECR, should we/I lodge a complaint against the Rector?
Unlike the Hell poor Morgan Bettinger had to go through over a totally bogus accusation by a pet activist groomed by UVa and the Jefferson School (but I repeat myself!), we have this on tape. Undeniable.
Asking for a friend…
Brilliant!
